The CAQH Index is the industry source for tracking health plan and provider adoption of electronic administrative transactions. The CAQH Index is representative of the medical and dental industry as well as pharmacy services.

Who should I contact if I have technical issues or trouble accessing the dashboard?

Can I purchase the Chartbook on its own without the other tools?

The Chartbook is available exclusively through CAQH Index Pro. The interactive format is designed to work seamlessly alongside the other analytical tools so you can explore the data with context and confidence. To access it, upgrade to Index Pro.

How often is the data updated?

The CAQH Index is published annually. We begin collecting data and participant input for the next edition in Q2 2026. If your organization would like to participate, contact insights@caqh.org.

How does the 1-hr consultation work?

With your purchase of CAQH Index Pro, you have access to a one-hour focused session with CAQH experts to reveal insights and opportunities to help your organization optimize operations and administrative workflows. Our experts are excited to discuss the 2025 Index findings and what they mean for you, ranging from topics such as transactions or metrics, methodology, policy connection, and more. 

How is the LLM secured? What can I ask?

The CAQH Ask the Index  LLM is deployed in a secure, controlled environment and is designed to work only with approved CAQH content. This includes all CAQH Index reports and other CAQH research and solution materials. It does not train on your inputs and does not access external systems or datasets. This approach reflects CAQH’s commitment to providing accurate, authorized data and maintaining the highest standards of trust and integrity across every solution we deliver.

For transparency and performance, your conversations are stored for 30 days, then automatically removed. They are encrypted and cannot be viewed by anyone at CAQH. This ensures you can explore the data with confidence, knowing the information you share stays private and protected.

You can ask any question related to CAQH Index findings, CAQH research, historical reports, or related insights. The tool is designed to help you quickly navigate trusted CAQH data, validate assumptions, and make faster, clearer decisions using reliable information at your fingertips.

Citation and Republication FAQs

How should I cite or reference CAQH Index Pro Chartbook and dashboard content?

CAQH Index Pro is a subscription-based product. While the interactive dashboards and Chartbook are not publicly accessible, CAQH encourages users to reference Index Pro data in external materials with clear attribution.

For most use cases, CAQH recommends citing the data source as:

In narrative text, reference the data as:
According to CAQH Index® Pro…or CAQH Index® Pro data shows…
 
If a public reference is required, CAQH recommends linking to the CAQH Index Executive Report, which provides publicly available context and topline findings. 
CAQH Index Pro content may not be altered or presented in a way that implies CAQH endorsement without prior written permission. 

Can I reuse or publish images from the paid subscription (i.e., PowerPoint, Google Slides)?

Images included in the paid subscription may not be reproduced or distributed without prior written permission from CAQH. To request permission, email insights@caqh.org. If approved, CAQH will provide an authorized, high-resolution image in the format you need (e.g., JPEG, PNG).

What is the CAQH Index?

The CAQH Index is the industry source for tracking health plan and provider adoption of electronic administrative transactions. It also estimates the industry cost savings opportunity, an amount that declines as adoption and efficiency grows. The CAQH Index is representative of the medical and dental industry as well as pharmacy services. Data is collected and reported annually. 

Which administrative transactions are tracked by the CAQH index?

The CAQH Index tracks common medical, dental and pharmacy administrative transactions:

  • Prior Authorization/Pre-Determination

Reported transactions may vary from year to year based on the data collected.

Who Contributes Data to the CAQH Index?

Medical and dental health plans and providers contribute data to the CAQH Index.

For the 2024 CAQH Index, data collected from medical plans represented 216 million lives, or approximately 63 percent of covered lives in the U.S. Data submissions from medical plans represented 3 billion claims and over 17 billion total transactions. Data collected from dental plans represented 136 million lives, or approximately 47 percent of covered dental lives in the U.S. Dental data submissions represented 223 million claims and a total of 967 million transactions. What Data is Collected from Participants?

Medical and dental plans report information on numbers of transactions by type (fully electronic, partially electronic or manual), as well as information on costs of those transactions. Participating medical and dental providers report on cost and time of transactions. Plans and providers may learn more about contributing data to the CAQH Index at any time by clicking here.

How frequently is CAQH Index data collected and reported?

Data is collected and reported annually. Ad hoc reports are released throughout the year. 

When will data collection begin for the 2025 CAQH Index?

Data collection will begin Summer 2025 and ends in Fall 2025. Organizations interested in contributing data should click here.

How do I participate in the CAQH Index?

Why should my organization contribute data to the CAQH Index?

By participating as a data contributor, organizations at every stage of adoption can help improve the overall quality of data, enabling deeper industry insight into the transition from manual to electronic administrative transactions. Data contributors also receive a customized report comparing organizational performance to national results for adoption and cost savings opportunities.

How is CAQH involved in the Index?

Since 2011, CAQH has owned and operated the Index. CAQH currently partners with NORC at the University of Chicago to assist with the provider data collection and analyses.

Can I get a copy of the CAQH Index? How much does it cost?

Yes. You can download a complimentary copy of the CAQH Index on the website here.

Can I use CAQH Index data in my presentation, blog, newsletter, etc?

Yes. We just ask that you cite the CAQH Index report.
